Which Glen Campbell recording became a 1968 hit after Jimmy Webb wrote it?

The story behind the answer

Glen Campbell’s 1968 hit “Wichita Lineman” was written by Jimmy Webb.

Webb wrote the song after seeing a solitary telephone line worker in rural Oklahoma. The unfinished image inspired a lyric about a worker maintaining communications infrastructure while longing for someone far away. Campbell recorded it with producer Al De Lory and the Wrecking Crew providing the studio backing.

The single became one of Campbell’s signature recordings and reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart. Its orchestral arrangement and lonely imagery also helped it cross into the pop market, where it became a major hit.

The title refers to a lineman working in or around Wichita, Kansas, although the song’s inspiration came from Webb’s Oklahoma sighting. It is often grouped with Webb’s other Campbell collaborations, including “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Galveston.”
