Which glacier in Argentina is famous for periodic ice dam ruptures in Los Glaciares National Park?
Answer
Perito Moreno Glacier
Answer
Perito Moreno Glacier
The glacier in Argentina famous for periodic ice-dam ruptures in Los Glaciares National Park is Perito Moreno Glacier.
Perito Moreno Glacier flows into Lake Argentino in Patagonia, where its advancing front can reach the opposite shore of the Magallanes Peninsula. This temporarily divides the lake into the Brazo Rico and the Canal de los Témpanos. Water trapped in the Brazo Rico can rise dramatically, sometimes about 30 meters above the main lake.
Eventually, water pressure and erosion create a tunnel through the ice barrier. The roof and remaining ice dam then collapse in a spectacular rupture, sending a surge into Lake Argentino and onward toward the Santa Cruz River. The cycle is natural, but it does not follow a precise timetable: events have occurred less than a year apart or been absent for many years.
The first recorded rupture occurred in 1917. Famous later events include those of 2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Perito Moreno is also notable because, unlike many retreating glaciers, its front has shown periods of relative stability and advance.
