Which giant snake, one of the world’s heaviest snakes, lives in Amazonian wetlands?

The story behind the answer

The green anaconda is one of the world’s heaviest snakes and lives in Amazonian wetlands.

Green anacondas are aquatic boas found across much of tropical South America. They favor slow-moving rivers, swamps, marshes, and flooded forest, where their eyes and nostrils positioned high on the head help them remain partly submerged while watching for prey.

They kill prey by constriction rather than venom. Fish, birds, turtles, capybaras, and other animals have all been recorded in their diet. Females are substantially larger than males, a pattern known as sexual size dimorphism.

Popular accounts often claim unverified extreme lengths, but reliable measurements are much more modest than many legends suggest. The green anaconda is also different from the reticulated python, which is generally described as the world’s longest snake but lives in Southeast Asia.
