Which Amazon Rainforest tree is widely regarded as the tallest tree in the region?

The story behind the answer

Dinizia excelsa is widely regarded as one of the tallest trees in the Amazon Rainforest and is known in Brazil as angelim-vermelho.

This giant leguminous tree grows in the terra firme forests of the Amazon Basin, where its roots are not regularly submerged by seasonal flooding. Mature specimens can rise dramatically above the surrounding canopy, giving them access to strong sunlight in one of the world’s most competitive forest environments.

Dinizia excelsa is also economically important because its dense, durable timber has been used in construction and other heavy-duty applications. That commercial value has contributed to logging pressure in parts of its range.

The kapok tree is another famous emergent Amazonian tree, but it is a different species. Likewise, Brazil nut and rubber trees are culturally and economically significant without being the same exceptionally tall species.
