Which German Romantic brothers published 'Grimm's Fairy Tales'?

The story behind the answer

The German Romantic brothers who published *Grimm’s Fairy Tales* were Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm—the Brothers Grimm.

Their collection was originally titled *Kinder- und Hausmärchen*, or *Children’s and Household Tales*. Volume 1 appeared on 20 December 1812 with 86 stories; a second volume followed, and later editions expanded the collection substantially. The brothers gathered stories from oral tellers and earlier printed sources, then edited and arranged them rather than inventing every tale themselves.

Famous entries include “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Rapunzel,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” A common mix-up is crediting Charles Perrault, whose earlier French literary versions include “Cinderella” and “Little Red Riding Hood,” or Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote many original literary fairy tales. Joseph Jacobs was a later English folklorist and collector, not one of the German brothers behind this collection.
