Which German leader commissioned the development of an affordable "people's car" in the 1930s?

The story behind the answer

Which German leader commissioned the development of an affordable “people’s car” in the 1930s? Adolf Hitler. In 1934, Hitler pressed Germany’s automotive industry to create a practical, inexpensive car for ordinary families. He imagined a vehicle that could carry two adults and three children, use little fuel, and serve the growing Reichsautobahn network.

Engineer Ferdinand Porsche received the development contract in June 1934, and his team created the rear-engine, air-cooled car that became the Volkswagen Type 1. The project was promoted through the Nazi leisure organization Kraft durch Freude, so the proposed car was known as the KdF-Wagen, or “Strength Through Joy car.”

A common mix-up is crediting Porsche alone. Porsche and his engineers designed and developed the vehicle, but Hitler initiated and politically sponsored the “people’s car” program. Another misconception is that ordinary buyers immediately received their cars: wartime priorities prevented normal civilian mass production, and large numbers of savers never received the vehicles they had paid toward. Series production began only after World War II, under British control of the factory.
