Cari Zalloni founded the German eyewear brand Cazal in 1975.
Zalloni was a designer and architect whose frames became known for dramatic geometry, bold proportions, and highly recognizable decorative details. Cazal eyewear became particularly influential in hip-hop style during the 1980s, when oversized luxury frames were used as expressive fashion symbols.
The brand name is derived from the designer’s name, Cari Zalloni, rather than from a German city or a type of lens. Cazal frames are often identified by model numbers, including the widely recognized 607 design.
Cazal should not be confused with contemporary Berlin brands such as Mykita and ic! berlin. Although all are associated with German eyewear, Cazal’s identity is rooted in Zalloni’s theatrical design language and its historical connection to music and street culture.
