Which German company owns the car brands Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini?

The story behind the answer

The German company that owns Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini is Volkswagen, formally Volkswagen Group or Volkswagen AG.

Volkswagen Group is a major automotive conglomerate headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Its portfolio includes the Volkswagen passenger-car brand alongside Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, Škoda, SEAT, Cupra, and Ducati. The group also operates commercial-vehicle and financial-services businesses, so it is much larger than the Volkswagen-badged car division alone.

Volkswagen acquired Lamborghini in 1998 through Audi, bringing the Italian supercar maker into the group. Its relationship with Porsche developed through a lengthy corporate integration, completed in 2012 when Volkswagen took control of Porsche’s automobile business. Audi remains an important organizing company within the group and owns Lamborghini directly.

This ownership structure explains a common quiz mix-up: Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini are separate marques with distinct histories, designs, and management identities, but they belong to the same parent group. “Volkswagen” is the familiar short answer; “Volkswagen Group” is the more precise corporate name.
