Which German city is home to the Würzburg Residence?

The German city of Würzburg is home to the Würzburg Residence.

The palace was commissioned in 1720 by Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, and completed in 1744. Balthasar Neumann served as its principal architect, while architects including Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Robert de Cotte contributed to its broader German, Austrian and French Baroque character.

The Residence is celebrated for its grand staircase, Imperial Hall and court chapel. Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his son Domenico, created major ceiling frescoes, adding an international artistic dimension to the courtly complex.

The palace suffered heavy damage during bombing in March 1945, but extensive restoration followed. The Würzburg Residence, together with its Court Gardens and Residence Square, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. It is often confused with palaces in Dresden or Munich, but its name directly identifies its Bavarian city.
