The Baroque palace in Budapest that now houses the Hungarian National Gallery is Buda Castle.
Buda Castle, also called the Royal Palace, stands on the southern end of Castle Hill above the Danube. Although the site has medieval origins—the first castle was completed in 1265—the palace occupying most of the complex today was built in the 18th century, between 1749 and 1769, in the Baroque style.
The Hungarian National Gallery occupies several former palace wings, while the Budapest History Museum and National Széchényi Library use other parts of the complex. The gallery’s collections span Hungarian art from the Middle Ages to the present, including Gothic altarpieces and works by major modern artists.
A common mix-up is treating Buda Castle as only a medieval fortress. In practice, the name usually refers to the larger historic palace and castle complex, which was badly damaged during World War II and rebuilt in a simplified Baroque style. The entire Castle District is part of Budapest’s UNESCO World Heritage site.
