Which German-born architect designed Helsinki Cathedral in Finland?
Answer
Carl Ludvig Engel
Answer
Carl Ludvig Engel
Carl Ludvig Engel designed Helsinki Cathedral in Finland.
Engel was a German-born architect who became especially important to the rebuilding of Helsinki as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The cathedral, originally known as St. Nicholas’ Church, was built between 1830 and 1852 on Senate Square. Its neoclassical design forms the visual centerpiece of the square.
The building was commissioned during the Russian period of Finnish history, when Helsinki was being developed as the administrative capital after the capital moved from Turku in 1812. The cathedral’s tall green dome and four smaller corner domes are among the city’s best-known landmarks.
A frequent confusion is with Alvar Aalto, another internationally famous Finnish architect. Aalto was born in 1898, decades after Engel’s cathedral was completed, and is associated with modernist buildings rather than Helsinki Cathedral’s neoclassical style.
