Which German automaker owns the Audi brand?

Audi’s history is more complicated than its modern ownership suggests. Engineer August Horch founded the original Audi company in 1909, and Audi later became part of Auto Union, represented by the famous four interlocking rings. Auto Union itself was acquired by Volkswagen in the 1960s, helping launch Audi’s modern era.

Audi is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany, but Volkswagen Group is the parent organization—not Daimler, BMW, or Ford. Daimler-Benz owned Auto Union for a period before Volkswagen acquired it, which is one reason historical ownership can cause confusion.

Within Volkswagen Group, Audi sits alongside brands such as Volkswagen, Porsche, Škoda, SEAT, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Ducati. Audi therefore remains distinctly German in identity while operating inside a much larger multinational automotive group.
