Answer
Pelvis series
Answer
Pelvis series
Georgia O'Keeffe’s Pelvis series uses animal bones as recurring subjects.
O'Keeffe began making paintings of animal bones after encountering bones and skulls in the New Mexico landscape. In the Pelvis series, the openings and curved structures of bones become framing devices through which the sky and distant landscape can be seen.
These works are not simply anatomical studies. O'Keeffe used the bones’ contours to explore space, light, and the relationship between solid objects and the sky. Their stark forms also reflect her long-standing interest in isolating a natural object and presenting it at an unusually large scale.
The series is distinct from her better-known skull paintings, although both groups draw on desert materials. The animal bones were collected and carried to her studios, allowing her to continue working from them after leaving the landscapes where she found them.
