O’Keeffe painted the large white jimson weed flower in 1932. The image belongs to her celebrated flower-painting tradition, in which enlarged blossoms fill the composition and invite close attention to their shapes, edges, and subtle changes in color.

The painting had belonged to philanthropist and collector Edith Guggenheim Mack, who left it to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The museum consigned it for sale, and the proceeds supported its art-acquisition and education programs. The work is often described simply as Jimson Weed, but its full title includes White Flower No. 1.
