Answer
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million in 2014, setting a record for a female artist.
O'Keeffe painted the large white jimson weed flower in 1932. The subject came from a plant that grew near her New Mexico home, and she enlarged the flower dramatically so its trumpet-shaped form fills much of the canvas.
The painting belonged to the collection of the philanthropist and collector Georgia O'Keeffe herself, who left it to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Sotheby's sold it in New York on November 20, 2014, for $44,405,000.
The sale surpassed the previous auction record for a female artist. It was later eclipsed by other sales, but the result remains a major landmark in the public market for women's art.
