Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting shows a large white flower against a dark background and is dated 1932?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 is Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting of a large white flower against a dark background.

O'Keeffe painted the work in 1932, enlarging a jimson weed flower so that its trumpet-shaped petals dominate the composition. The stark white bloom stands out against a nearly black ground, creating a powerful contrast and focusing attention on the flower's structure.

The painting became especially notable because the philanthropist and collector David H. Koch purchased it at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million. At that time, it set a record for the highest price paid for a painting by a female artist at auction. That sales record later changed as other works by women artists reached higher prices.

The title is sometimes shortened to White Flower, but the full title distinguishes it from O'Keeffe's many other enlarged flower paintings. The work is also separate from her Black Iris paintings and from Red Canna, two frequently associated floral subjects.
