The U.S. Postal Service featured Georgia O'Keeffe's Red Poppy on a 1996 stamp.
The stamp was part of the American art series and reproduced O'Keeffe's close-up treatment of a flower. Her flower paintings enlarge petals and centers so dramatically that the subject approaches abstraction, making the image immediately recognizable even at stamp size.
O'Keeffe painted many flowers, including poppies, irises, calla lilies, and cannas. Red Poppy is a 1927 oil painting, while Oriental Poppies dates from 1928 and is a different work. Jimson Weed is also separate and became famous for its later auction price.
The postal issue helped bring O'Keeffe's art to a mass audience. It was not the first time her work had appeared in popular reproductions, but the stamp connected her modernist flower imagery with a national cultural program.
