Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting depicts a red, white, and blue cow skull?

The story behind the answer

Cow's Skull: Red, White, and Blue depicts a cow skull against a red, white, and blue background.

Georgia O'Keeffe painted the work in 1931, during the period when she was increasingly drawn to the landscapes and objects of New Mexico. The skull is presented frontally, with the long form of the bone spanning the composition. Its colors evoke the United States flag without turning the subject into a literal patriotic scene.

O'Keeffe frequently collected bones and other objects she found in the desert. She valued their sculptural shapes and weathered surfaces, and she arranged them in ways that made them appear monumental. The skull paintings are among the works most closely associated with her New Mexico period.

The painting is sometimes confused with her other bone pictures, such as Ram's Head, White Hollyhock-Hills. That work combines a ram's skull with a flower and a distant New Mexico landscape, whereas Cow's Skull: Red, White, and Blue centers on one cow skull and a flag-like color scheme.
