Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting became the most expensive artwork by a woman sold at auction in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became the most expensive artwork by a woman sold at auction in 2014.

Painted in 1932, Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 depicts a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. O'Keeffe made the work at her New Mexico home, and the flower was a familiar plant around the property. Its enlarged scale turns a single blossom into an imposing, almost monumental subject.

Sotheby's sold the painting in New York on November 20, 2014, for $44.4 million, including the buyer's premium. The result set a record for the highest auction price paid for a work by a female artist at that time.

The record concerns an auction sale, not every possible sale of art by a woman. It is also distinct from the separate question of which plant inspired the painting: the title itself identifies jimson weed, also called datura.
