Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting became the first work by a woman artist to sell for more than $44 million?

Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became the first work by a woman artist to sell for more than $44 million.

The 1932 painting depicts a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. In November 2014, it sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. The purchaser was the Walmart heiress Alice Walton, who placed it in the collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

The sale set an auction record for any work by a female artist at the time. It was not O'Keeffe’s first famous flower painting, and it should not be confused with Black Iris, an earlier 1926 work.

The record was later surpassed by other women artists, but the 2014 sale remains a landmark in the market’s recognition of O'Keeffe’s value.
