Answer
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became the first work by a woman artist sold for more than $20 million at auction.
Its 2014 Sotheby's sale reached $44.4 million including the buyer's premium. The price made it the most expensive work by a female artist sold at auction at that time, giving the painting an importance beyond its subject and composition.
O'Keeffe created the work in 1932, during the period when flowers were among her most recognizable motifs. The single white bloom fills much of the picture, with a dark background that heightens its shape and brightness. The enlarged scale is characteristic of the way she made familiar natural forms visually commanding.
The record was not permanent: later auction sales by other women artists exceeded it. Still, the Jimson Weed sale remains a frequently cited milestone in the public reassessment of women artists and their place in the art market.
