Which Georgia O’Keeffe home in Abiquiú became a National Historic Landmark in 1998?

The story behind the answer

The Abiquiú Home and Studio became a National Historic Landmark in 1998.

O’Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe hacienda in Abiquiú, New Mexico, in 1945 and spent years having it restored. She moved into the house in 1949 and used it as both a residence and a working studio. The property remained one of the most important places in her later life.

The house and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in O’Keeffe’s work. A gate in the adobe wall, a courtyard, and the nearby Cerro Pedernal became especially recognizable subjects. The studio’s large north-facing window provided stable light for painting.

The site is separate from Ghost Ranch, where O’Keeffe also owned a home. The Abiquiú property is preserved through the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and is available for limited guided visits.
