Which genre is listed first for Taylor Swift's “august”?

Dream pop is the first genre listed for Taylor Swift’s “august.”

The song is also associated with guitar pop and soft rock, but dream pop best captures its hazy atmosphere, reverberated vocals, layered textures, and gradual emotional build. Its sound is more spacious and impressionistic than the tightly structured pop singles of Swift’s earlier career.

The track’s production includes guitars, keyboards, strings, and minimal synthesizers. The arrangement grows toward a full-orchestra climax, helping the song evoke the blurred memories and late-summer longing described in its fictional narrative.

Because Folklore is often grouped under indie folk or alternative pop, listeners may assume those labels are the formal answer. Those descriptions can refer to the album’s wider style, but the song’s listed genre information specifically places dream pop first, followed by guitar pop and soft rock.
