Which game introduced Edward Kenway as its playable protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag introduced Edward Kenway as its playable protagonist. Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with the Assassin-Templar conflict while pursuing wealth and opportunity in the Caribbean.

The game is set primarily during the Golden Age of Piracy, around 1715. Its open world includes islands and ports across the West Indies, and naval travel and ship combat are central parts of the experience.

Edward is also the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, known as Connor, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. Black Flag therefore connects its pirate story to the Kenway family narrative while using a different historical period and gameplay emphasis.
