Which fruit company was behind the 1954 Guatemalan coup?
Answer
United Fruit Company
Answer
United Fruit Company
The United Fruit Company was the fruit company most closely associated with the 1954 Guatemalan coup. Its lobbying and economic interests helped persuade U.S. officials that President Jacobo Árbenz’s government posed a dangerous communist threat.
Árbenz’s agrarian reform program sought to redistribute unused land to landless peasants. United Fruit owned extensive territory in Guatemala, much of it uncultivated, and faced expropriation under the reform law. The company objected to the compensation offered and mounted an influential public-relations and lobbying campaign in the United States.
The coup itself was carried out through the CIA operation PBSuccess, which armed and supported a force led by Carlos Castillo Armas. Árbenz resigned in June 1954, ending Guatemala’s democratic reform period and ushering in a military dictatorship. United Fruit did not literally conduct the coup, so “behind” should be understood as describing its lobbying influence and interests rather than direct command.
Historians debate how much weight to assign the company’s role compared with Cold War anti-communism and U.S. strategic concerns. Still, United Fruit is the canonical answer because its landholdings, political connections, and campaign against Árbenz were central to the episode.
