Which frozen pizza brand began at the Tombstone Tap tavern?
Answer
Tombstone
Answer
Tombstone
The frozen pizza brand that began at the Tombstone Tap tavern is Tombstone.
Tombstone pizza was developed in Medford, Wisconsin, by brothers Pep and Ron Simek and two other partners. The business grew out of the Tombstone Tap, a tavern owned by the Simeks. The tavern stood across from a cemetery, which explains the business’s memorable name and its later Western-themed branding.
The brand was introduced in 1962 and became known as a frozen pizza sold with toppings such as pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, onions, bell peppers, and sausage. Its name is therefore tied to the tavern’s location and identity, not to a separate pizza style or a cemetery-themed recipe.
Tombstone remained associated with Kraft Foods after becoming a wholly owned division in 1988. In 2010, Nestlé acquired Kraft’s frozen-pizza business, which included Tombstone along with brands such as DiGiorno and Jack’s. The brand’s famous advertising slogan later played on the question, “What do you want on your Tombstone?”
