Which French Open event is contested for the Coupe Simonne-Mathieu?

The women’s doubles event at the French Open is contested for the Coupe Simonne-Mathieu.

The trophy honors Simonne Mathieu, one of France’s leading tennis players of the 1930s. Mathieu won the French Championships women’s singles title in 1938 and 1939, and she captured six women’s doubles titles at the tournament between 1933 and 1939. The women’s doubles trophy was named for her as a tribute to that record.

Mathieu’s story extends beyond tennis. During World War II, she founded and led the Corps Féminin Français, a women’s volunteer unit associated with the Free French Forces. She was therefore remembered both as a champion and as an important figure in wartime French history.

The other senior French Open events have different trophies: the men’s singles champion receives the Coupe des Mousquetaires, the women’s singles champion the Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen, the men’s doubles winners the Coupe Jacques-Brugnon, and the mixed doubles winners the Coupe Marcel-Bernard.
