Which French knight was known as “the Good Knight Without Fear and Without Blame”?
Answer
Pierre Terrail de Bayard
Answer
Pierre Terrail de Bayard
Pierre Terrail de Bayard was the French knight known as “the Good Knight Without Fear and Without Blame.”
Bayard was born around 1476 at Château Bayard in the Dauphiné region of France. He served several French kings during the Italian Wars, a series of conflicts involving France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and Italian states. His reputation combined battlefield courage with an idealized sense of honor and courtesy.
One famous episode occurred in 1503 at the Battle of Garigliano, where Bayard was said to have defended a bridge against a much larger Spanish force. The episode helped build his legendary image, although later accounts sometimes blend documented events with chivalric storytelling. His life was celebrated in a 1527 biography by Jacques de Mailles.
Bayard died in 1524 while covering a French retreat in Italy after the Battle of the Sesia. He is sometimes confused with Bertrand du Guesclin, another celebrated French commander, but du Guesclin lived more than a century earlier.
