George Washington visited Fort Le Boeuf in 1753 to deliver Virginia’s warning to the French. The 21-year-old Washington was sent by Virginia governor Robert Dinwiddie to demand that French forces leave the disputed Ohio Country.

Washington and guide Christopher Gist reached the fort on December 11, 1753. Fort Le Boeuf stood near present-day Waterford, Pennsylvania, and formed part of a French chain linking Lake Erie with the Ohio River system. Its position helped France move troops, supplies, and trade goods between Canada and the interior.

The fort’s commander, Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, received Washington courteously but rejected Dinwiddie’s demand.
