Bollé began in 1888 as a French maker of combs founded by Seraphin Bollé.
The company was established in Oyonnax, an area in the Ain region known for plastics and molded products. Bollé later moved from combs and related goods into protective eyewear, eventually becoming associated with sunglasses, ski goggles, and sports equipment.
Its history illustrates how several French manufacturers moved from industrial or fashion accessories into specialist optical products. Bollé’s modern reputation is especially strong in skiing, cycling, and other outdoor activities.
Bollé is often confused with Julbo because both are French brands with long histories in mountain eyewear. Their origins differ: Julbo began with Jules Baud in the Jura, while Bollé traces its start to Seraphin Bollé’s comb-making business in 1888.
