Which French city is the home of the School of Nancy, a major Art Nouveau center?

The story behind the answer

The French city that is home to the School of Nancy, a major Art Nouveau center, is Nancy.

The École de Nancy was a collective of artists, designers, craftsmen, and manufacturers active mainly between 1890 and 1914. Its leading figures included Émile Gallé, Louis Majorelle, Antonin Daum, Jacques Grüber, and Victor Prouvé. They worked across glass, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, architecture, and stained glass.

Nancy’s importance grew after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, when Alsace and part of Lorraine were annexed by Germany. Many people who chose to remain French moved to Nancy, helping the city become an economic and cultural center. In 1901, the group formally organized as the Alliance provinciale des industries d’art, commonly called the École de Nancy.

A common mix-up is confusing the School of Nancy with Paris, another important French Art Nouveau center. Nancy’s artists were especially known for flowing plant forms and for joining fine art with practical household objects.
