French actress Anna Mouglalis portrayed Coco Chanel in the 2009 film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.
Directed by Jan Kounen, the film also stars Mads Mikkelsen as the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It explores a fictionalised relationship between Chanel and Stravinsky, set against the artistic and social world of early twentieth-century Paris. The movie was adapted from Chris Greenhalgh’s 2002 novel of the same subject.
The film opens with a recreation of the controversial 1913 Paris premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, then follows the designers’ and composer’s intersecting lives. It was selected to close the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, although reviews were mixed and it was not a major commercial success.
Mouglalis is sometimes confused with other actresses who played Chanel. Audrey Tautou portrayed Chanel in Coco Before Chanel, while Keira Knightley played her in a 2013 short film for Chanel. Marion Cotillard did not portray Chanel in this film.
