Which founding document does America250 commemorate signing 250 years ago?

The story behind the answer

America250 commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago.

The Declaration announced that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent states rather than colonies subject to Great Britain. The Second Continental Congress adopted the document on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia.

Thomas Jefferson drafted the main text, while Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were among the committee members who helped revise it. The document’s famous statement that all men are created equal became one of its most widely remembered passages.

The Declaration is not the same document as the Constitution. The Constitution established the federal government’s framework in 1787, while the Declaration explained the colonies’ decision to separate from British rule. The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution in 1791.
