Which Fortune list is a subset of the Fortune 500?

The story behind the answer

The Fortune 100 is a subset of the Fortune 500, consisting of the 100 highest-ranked companies in that larger revenue ranking.

Fortune introduced the Fortune 500 in 1955 as an annual list of major U.S. corporations. The ranking orders eligible companies by revenue, so the Fortune 100 is simply the leading fifth of that group—not a separate measure of profits, stock-market value, employee count, or brand strength. A company in the Fortune 100 is automatically in the Fortune 500, but most Fortune 500 companies are outside the top 100.

The names in the answer choices describe different lists. The Fortune 1000 is the broader group containing the 1,000 largest U.S. companies, with the Fortune 500 forming its top half. The Global 500 ranks the world’s largest corporations, rather than only U.S. companies. Forbes Global 2000 uses a different methodology that combines measures such as sales, profit, assets, and market value.

The phrase “Fortune 100” can also be confused with Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” which is an employee-workplace ranking. In this question, Fortune 100 means the top 100 by revenue within the Fortune 500.
