In the 2025 Fortune 500 top 20, Microsoft had the industry label Computer software.
Microsoft ranked 14th on the 2025 Fortune 500, which orders U.S. companies by revenue from the preceding fiscal year. Fortune classified Microsoft under “Computer software,” distinguishing it from nearby technology companies assigned to categories such as internet services and retailing, computers and office equipment, or semiconductors.
Microsoft’s classification reflects the company’s historic and continuing core businesses: Windows, Microsoft 365, enterprise software, developer tools, and cloud services through Azure. Its portfolio also includes Xbox, LinkedIn, GitHub, and artificial-intelligence products, but Fortune still places the corporation in the software industry.
The distractors belong to different Fortune industry categories in the 2025 top 20. Amazon and Alphabet were listed under internet services and retailing, while Apple was classified under computers and office equipment. Microsoft’s rank can also be confused with its much higher position in market-capitalization lists, which measure investor valuation rather than annual revenue.
