Which fortified Moroccan village near Ouarzazate is a UNESCO-listed ksar?
Answer
Ait Benhaddou
Answer
Ait Benhaddou
Aït Benhaddou is the fortified Moroccan village near Ouarzazate that is recognized as a UNESCO-listed ksar. The earthen settlement stands beside the Ounila River along an old caravan route linking the Sahara with Marrakesh.
A ksar, or fortified village, typically contains tightly grouped homes, defensive walls, towers, communal spaces, and sometimes a mosque or granary. Aït Benhaddou is built from rammed earth, adobe, clay brick, and wood, materials well suited to the dry climate but vulnerable to rain and neglect.
The site has been fortified since at least the Almoravid period, although most surviving structures are thought to date from the seventeenth century or later. UNESCO inscribed it in 1987 for its architecture and importance as a traditional pre-Saharan settlement. It is also frequently mistaken for a kasbah: a kasbah is usually a fortified residence, while a ksar is a fortified village or settlement.
