Which fort was captured by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys in 1775?

The story behind the answer

Which fort was captured by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys in 1775? The answer is Fort Ticonderoga.

On May 10, 1775, Ethan Allen led the Green Mountain Boys in a surprise attack on the lightly defended British fort at the southern end of Lake Champlain. Benedict Arnold also took part, though the two men later disputed their respective roles and claims to credit. The small British garrison surrendered without a major battle.

The capture gave the Patriot forces valuable artillery and control of an important north–south water route. During the winter of 1775–1776, Henry Knox organized the difficult transport of many of Ticonderoga’s cannons to Boston. Placed on Dorchester Heights, those guns helped force the British to evacuate Boston in March 1776.

A common mix-up is Fort Crown Point, which the Patriots also captured nearby on May 11, 1775. Ticonderoga, however, was the fort famously seized by Allen and his men in the dawn raid. The fort later became important again when British forces under John Burgoyne captured it in 1777.
