Who commanded the American forces at the Battle of Cowpens?

The story behind the answer

Who commanded the American forces at the Battle of Cowpens? Daniel Morgan commanded them. On January 17, 1781, Brigadier General Morgan led American Continental soldiers, militia, and cavalry to a major victory over the British and Loyalist force commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton in South Carolina.

Morgan designed the battle around the strengths and limitations of his troops. He placed some militia forward as skirmishers, instructed them to fire and withdraw, and then positioned more reliable Continental infantry behind them. After the American line delivered a controlled volley, Morgan ordered a movement that helped turn the battle into a double envelopment. Tarleton's force was decisively defeated, suffering heavy casualties and hundreds captured.

A common mix-up is Nathanael Greene, who commanded the Southern Department of the Continental Army and directed the broader campaign. Francis Marion and Andrew Pickens were important Patriot leaders in the southern theater, but neither commanded the American army at Cowpens. Morgan's victory helped restore American momentum before the later campaign that culminated at Yorktown.
