Which former Province of Canada section became Ontario at Confederation?

The story behind the answer

Which former Province of Canada section became Ontario at Confederation? The answer is Canada West.

Canada West was the section of the Province of Canada that had developed from the former colony of Upper Canada. At Confederation on July 1, 1867, it became the province of Ontario. Canada East, the former Lower Canada, became Quebec.

The Province of Canada had been created by the Act of Union in 1841, joining Upper and Lower Canada under one legislature. Its two sections often had different languages, religious traditions, legal systems, and political priorities. Equal representation for Canada East and Canada West also contributed to legislative deadlock, strengthening support for a federal union.

Canada West should not be confused with Rupert’s Land, a vast territory transferred to Canada in 1870, or with Nova Scotia, which entered Confederation as an existing province. Ontario’s name was selected for the new province created from Canada West.
