The forest spirit that guards the woods and can mislead travelers is the Leshy. In Slavic folklore, the Leshy is a supernatural guardian or master of woodland spaces, especially in East Slavic traditions.
Stories place the Leshy in hollows, tree stumps, fallen logs, caves, or dense thickets. Travelers who enter his territory may become hopelessly lost, reflecting the forest’s danger as much as the spirit’s supernatural power. The Leshy may also confuse people by imitating voices, changing size, or shifting appearance.
He is not always portrayed as purely evil. His relationship with humans depends partly on how they treat the forest and its animals. Tales can present him as a solitary spirit, one of several beings in a large forest, or a family man with a wife and children. The Domovoi belongs to the home; the Vodyanoy to water; the Leshy’s domain is woodland.
