“One by One” was the first Foo Fighters album to feature guitarist Chris Shiflett. Released in 2002, it was the band’s fourth studio album and followed There Is Nothing Left to Lose, which had been completed before Shiflett joined the group.
Shiflett became part of the Foo Fighters lineup during the period between those albums and contributed guitar to One by One. The record also marked the first Foo Fighters album on which Dave Grohl no longer played drums; Taylor Hawkins handled the drum parts as the band’s permanent drummer.
The album had a famously troubled production. The band rejected much of its initial work and rerecorded most of the material during an intense two-week period. That pressure helped produce a heavier, more aggressive sound, heard on songs such as “All My Life” and “Times Like These.”
Wasting Light was the next Foo Fighters album to feature Shiflett, not the first. The Colour and the Shape and There Is Nothing Left to Lose predate his membership in the band.
