Georgia O'Keeffe painted a jimson weed flower in her 1932 work Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The painting shows a single white jimson weed blossom against a dark background. O'Keeffe often enlarged flowers so that viewers had to confront their shapes, folds, and tonal transitions at an unfamiliar scale. She explained that people were too busy to notice flowers closely, so she painted them large enough to make them look.
In November 2014, the work sold at Sotheby's for $44.4 million, including fees. That sale made it the most expensive painting by a female artist sold at auction at the time and set a record for an American work of art.
The title is often shortened to Jimson Weed, but the full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. It is also easy to confuse the subject with O'Keeffe's many poppy, iris, and calla-lily paintings. The plant itself, jimson weed, is also known as Datura and is poisonous.
