Jimson weed is the flower depicted in Georgia O'Keeffe’s 1932 painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The painting shows a single white jimson weed blossom enlarged to monumental scale against a pale background. O'Keeffe frequently magnified flowers so that viewers had to confront their shapes, folds, and tonal transitions more intensely than they would in ordinary observation.
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became especially famous after selling at auction for $44.4 million in 2014, then a record price for a painting by a female artist. The sale brought renewed attention to both the work and the long history of under-recognition faced by women artists.
Jimson weed is also called Datura, a genus known for trumpet-shaped flowers and toxic properties. The painting should not be confused with O'Keeffe's many iris or poppy paintings; its single white blossom and broad trumpet form identify the subject.
