Jimson weed is the flower depicted in Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The painting presents a single white jimson-weed flower in close-up, with enlarged petals and a dark background. O'Keeffe frequently magnified flowers so viewers would notice their forms and structures rather than seeing them as small decorative objects.
Jimson weed is also called Datura, a plant known for trumpet-shaped flowers. The botanical subject is important because the painting is not a generic white flower: its title identifies a specific plant. In 2014, the work sold for $44.4 million, setting a record for a work by a female artist at auction at that time.
That auction record is sometimes confused with the painting's date or with O'Keeffe's other flower images. The 1932 work remains especially famous for combining a precise botanical reference with monumental scale.
