Jimson weed was the flower Georgia O'Keeffe painted in her 1932 work Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The painting shows a large white jimson weed blossom against a pale background. O'Keeffe's close-up treatment makes the flower appear monumental, with its trumpet-shaped petals extending far beyond the scale viewers normally associate with a roadside plant.
The work became especially famous after it sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, then a record price for a work by a female artist. The sale drew renewed attention to O'Keeffe's flower paintings and to the long history of women artists being undervalued by major institutions and markets.
The flower is also called datura, a name that can create confusion with other botanical subjects. Jimson weed is the common English name used in the painting's title. The work belongs to O'Keeffe's celebrated period of magnified flowers and is held by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
