Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 depicts a datura flower.
The work presents a large white datura blossom against a dark background, magnifying a flower that can appear delicate while belonging to a poisonous plant. O'Keeffe often enlarged flowers so viewers had to confront their structures and colors at close range.
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became especially famous after it sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million. That price made it the most expensive artwork by a female artist at the time, although later sales surpassed the record.
Datura is also called jimson weed, moonflower, or thornapple in different contexts. The title therefore refers to the plant rather than to a separate fictional flower.
