Which flower appears in Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting that sold for a record price in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Jimson weed appears in Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.

The large white-flower painting became famous when it sold at Sotheby's in New York in November 2014 for $44.4 million, including fees. That sale set a record for the highest price paid at auction for a work by a female artist at the time.

Jimson weed is the common name for Datura stramonium, a plant with trumpet-shaped flowers. O'Keeffe enlarged the flower so that its form filled the canvas, a characteristic approach that encouraged viewers to look closely at natural details.

The record was later surpassed by other works, so it should be understood as a 2014 auction record, not a permanent all-time claim. O'Keeffe also painted many other flowers, including irises, poppies, and calla lilies.
