Which college did Georgia O'Keeffe attend in Charlottesville during the summer of 1912?
Answer
University of Virginia
Answer
University of Virginia
Georgia O'Keeffe attended the University of Virginia's summer school in Charlottesville in 1912.
At Virginia, she studied art education and encountered the ideas of Arthur Wesley Dow, whose teaching emphasized composition, line, color, and personal expression rather than simply copying appearances. Dow's approach became a turning point in O'Keeffe's artistic thinking.
She later taught art in Texas and South Carolina and used Dow's principles in her own classes. In 1915, she began making a series of abstract charcoal drawings that broke decisively with conventional academic art.
The University of Virginia was not O'Keeffe's only college connection. She had previously studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later attended the University of Virginia summer program specifically for teacher training and art study.
