Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 depicts a jimson weed flower.
The work presents a single large white blossom against a pale background. O'Keeffe repeatedly enlarged flowers so viewers would notice their forms and structures rather than pass them quickly. Jimson weed, also called Datura, grows in the American Southwest and became one of the natural subjects associated with her art.
The painting is also notable for its later market history. In 2014, it sold at Sotheby's for $44.4 million, then a record price for a work by a female artist at auction. That record was later surpassed by other sales.
The title is sometimes shortened to Jimson Weed, but the full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. It should not be confused with O'Keeffe's many paintings of poppies, irises, and other flowers.
