Which flag inspired Paraguay's red-white-blue triband colors?

Paraguay’s red-white-blue triband was inspired by the colours of the French Tricolour.

The Paraguayan flag’s three horizontal stripes were adopted in the independence era and are commonly linked to the French revolutionary flag. The colours were understood as symbols of independence and liberty, ideas that resonated strongly in a newly independent South American republic.

Paraguay adopted a red-white-blue tricolour in 1812, and the present basic design was formally unified in 1842. Although the Netherlands also has a red-white-blue flag, the commonly cited inspiration for Paraguay is France’s Tricolour. The similar colours can therefore cause a fair quiz-taker to choose the Dutch flag, but that is not the canonical answer.

Paraguay’s flag has another unusual feature: its obverse and reverse carry different emblems. The front displays the national coat of arms, while the back shows the seal of the treasury.
